City of Music
The Seattle City of Music Mobile App is designed to elevate local music, musicians and music businesses by showcasing a collection of music discovery resources that will be invaluable to local music consumers and visitors to the area.
With the new app, local listeners and visitors to the area including to Sea-Tac Airport will have a single source for listening to local music playlists, finding upcoming live shows, and viewing documentary videos about the Northwest music scene. Content is provided by a dozen local outlets, including KEXP, PlayNetwork, SeaTac Airport, Jet City Stream, SSG Music, Rainy Dawg Radio, Seattle Weekly, Seattle Times, 107.7 The END, Sound on the Sound, the Stranger, and Sport'n Life Records.
The biggest challenge (and great opportunity) of this project was coordinating with businesses and agencies throughout the Seattle area. Music businesses such as KEXP, 107.7 The End, The Stranger, and many others manage their own live feeds. Port of Seattle, The Seattle Chamber, Play Network, and FrontRunner all kept us on our toes. On top of all this was getting the app to work flawlessly on iPhones and Android Devices.
Another challenge was branding the app to have a similar feel as City of Music's current broad range of musical avenues website but giving the app a more specific stand alone feel that favored its use.
Knowing the complexity of the app and the many players involved, it was crucial to sketch out simple wireframes based off requests, technologies to be used, level of knowledge for creating and managing music feeds, and of course, user needs and desires. It was vital that everyone be on the same page from the start.
After fully wireframing and getting each parties' sign offs, we moved on to the User Experience and User Interface elements. The details are what mattered, so by streamlining the initial navigation to appear when first opened we allowed the user to quickly get to business. This and large iconography cut down on the learning curve, bettering the user experience.
Giving the music player a more traditional look and feel allowed the user to feel at home and to easily learn more about the music.
