TapMIDI is an app aimed at primarily digital musicians. It provides an interface for wirelessly sending MIDI signals to computers. Users of the app can perform a wide variety of actions, including playing notes, controlling volume, pitch, and much more.
Unlike similar apps, TapMIDI runs on the idea that the user should be able to create a control scheme that suits him or her best. Because of this, it presents the user with an open canvas that the user can then place controls on to his or her liking.
The biggest obstacle in creating this app was the need for instantaneous wireless connections. This was achieves through many small adjustments and the result shows. TapMIDI is able to send MIDI signals to computers on the local network at blazingly fast speeds using the low-overhead UDP networking protocol.
Secondary to this was the need to provide a simple yet effecting user interface.
By utilizing UDP, a "fire-and-forget" networking protocol with very little overhead, we were able to communicate effectively instantaneously over WiFi with other computers.
In order to accomplish a user interface as effective as the communication, TapMIDI was designed as a blank canvas. What this means is that users are able to place any type of control, move it around, and scale it to suit their needs. Together with fast communication, the user experience is seamless.
